This weekend, my parents visited, and I took them to Williamsburg in Brooklyn for a taste of, er, culture. We headed to Smorgasberg first, this nice (albeit hot) food festival along the Hudson with a great view of Manhattan. The food’s yummy and experimental. I had a frozen banana covered in chocolate, salt and peanuts. Fish tacos, strawberry tea with pearls, gruyere grilled cheese sandwich and a milkshake made with local yellow peaches and light Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream. Hungry yet? Hyphen magazine and The Asian American Writers’ Workshop (AAWW), a literary nonprofit, are accepting entries for the fourth annual Asian American Short Story Contest. The contest is looking for stories that take the reader “outside yourself into a new experience, one you haven’t lived but recognize completely, and subtly, magically show you something new about yourself.”

As a teenager, I was tantalized by glossy magazines promising a better beach body, sexier hair and cute boys. (Okay, I’ll admit—they still draw me in 10 years later). Mother’s Day is this Sunday, so if you haven’t yet thought of how to show your appreciation for the important women in your life, it’s getting close to crunch time. Here are some creative ideas to help you out.
Handmade creations. It’s always the little things that count, so making a card from scratch is the perfect, least expensive way to show you care. Get construction paper, and if you’re not artistically inclined, stick with making geometric-shaped patterns in different colors as a creative background for the card.
