American Vogue’s December issue caught our attention with its two-page spread titled, “Asia Major,” featuring Chinese models Du Juan, Liu Wen, Bonnie Chen and Lily Zhi; South Korean models Hyoni Kang, So Young Kang and Lee Hyun; and Japanese model Tao Okamoto.
It’s not often that you see an Asian model take center stage in the fashion industry, whether on a cover of a magazine or as the first face of a top brand fashion show—so the fact that American Vogue is placing the spotlight on Asian models is incredibly refreshing …

Since discovering J.Crew’s sister brand, Madewell, at their first flagship store in SoHo, I’ve been a huge fan of their clothes, accessories and overall easy, hip style. The brand has been quickly building momentum with the recent release of Alexa Chung for Madewell’s fall 2010 collection. Last Thursday, Audrey Magazine, a lifestyle magazine for Asian American females, hosted their third annual Audrey’s Fashion Night Out at the Petersen Automotive Museum, displaying and parading a fine collection of young Asian American designers, models, celebrities, musicians, artists and fashionistas.

Co-designed by Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein, the Timo Weiland spring 2011 presentation on Sunday titled “A Wharf on the Baltic” was a well-edited, contemporary collection for the young, polished consumer with distinct, bold style. Proving the duo as up-and-coming designers with tons of potential, the collection reflected a nautical spirit, inspired by the modern lifestyle of Scandanavia’s fjordlands and archipelagos. With bright bold colors and prints, color blocking, and playful twists, there was great detail and character embedded in each look.

While there is a plethora of talent showing at Lincoln Center’s premiere season, many designers opted to display their collections off-site in more intimate spaces. This season, Vietnamese-born Thuy Diep invited guests to the Audi Forum on Park Avenue for her show.
For spring/summer 2011, Thuy presented wearable separates in a warm color palette.
