Introducing Up-and-Coming Filmmaker Joyce Wu

By Tiffany Hu | 11 Mar 2012 | No Comments

If you had the chance to create your own feature film, what would it be about? Joyce Wu, a MFA candidate in Film Production at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, wrote a film called The Real Mikado that follows the life of a struggling Asian American actress named Sophie. Sophie is forced to move back into her parents’ house in Detroit because she has been unable to find work as an actress. However, her biggest break comes when she is offered an opportunity to direct a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, in hopes of saving the community theater after it is being threatened to be shut down over budget cuts. Led by a “rag tag group of senior citizens, gawky teenager and housewives,” The Real Mikado is bound to be a refreshing, funny, and relateable film for all. And how can you help? You can either donate on her page at IndieGoGo or spread the word on Facebook or Twitter.

The two sisters, who attend seventh and tenth grade in LA update their blog with photos, videos, and essays chronicling their lives on the West Coast. As their blog has grown, they also cover celebrities, food, and events surrounding Asian American culture.

And the Academy Award Goes To… You Again?

By Malia Griggs | 27 Feb 2012 | 2 Comments

I watched the Oscars last night, and I hate to say it but I was thoroughly unimpressed. According to a study by the LA Times, the average age of the Academy voter is 62—and it showed. What would an Oscar awards show be like if, say, Tina and Amy co-hosted (instead of “Billy Crystals,” as Sacha Baron Cohen’s the Dictator calls him)? Or, perhaps even more bizarrely, Harold and Kumar? That would be crazy.

YouTube Star of the Week: Jun Sung Ahn

By Tiffany Hu | 21 Feb 2012 | 2 Comments

Jun Sung Ahn is a modern-day Renaissance man. You may recognize him from his playful and catchy violin covers on his YouTube channel JuNCurryAhn, but did you know that he also plays guitar, sings, dances, cooks, and plays a killer Chinese Yo-Yo? Jun, a freshman at Northwestern University who studies radio, film and TV, recently placed second on Clara C’s cover contest, even though his video had the most views out of all the contestants. He’s someone to look out for in the future—and lucky for Mochi, we had the lucky opportunity to interview him. And for those lovely single ladies out there who’s interested—he’s single!
