The approach is certainly a little untraditional, but that was what 17-year-old Knives Chau did in the Scott Pilgrim comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Come celebrate the inspiring artistry of Asian American filmmakers as the 33rd Annual Asian American International Film Festival kicks off from July 15 to 24 in New York City. Tickets have already gone on sale, and this year, the festival will continue to promote its three-for-two discount, in which a free third ticket will be given for every two tickets purchased. The festival will showcase original feature films, short films and documentaries from rising and established Asian American filmmakers. Last week, the much hyped M. Night Shyamalan movie, “The Last Airbender” opened in theaters. Featuring the highly criticized white-washed cast, many among the Asian Pacific American community hoped this would be a flop. Well, according to the wave of recent reviews for the film and the astoundingly low 8 percent it received on Rotten Tomatoes, this wish has been granted.
According to the majority of reviews, when you critique the movie by its major components—storyline, cinematography and acting—there was nothing that made it good.

Beginning this Saturday, March 13 through March 21, thousands of film aficionados will flock to the 28th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Since 1982, the festival has been an annual event showcasing about 120 new Asian American and Asian films in unique venues throughout San Francisco, San Jose and Berkeley. There will be a range of short programs, full-length features, special guests, musical performances, forums, and even happy hours and parties. Focus Features recently released the trailer for their upcoming documentary, “Babies,” set to release in theaters on April 16, 2010. Just from the trailer, it’s pretty clear that this film is simplistically brilliant and can do no wrong. I mean come on, who can resist the adorable spontaneity of babies?
