Who: Sara & Suruzi
Spotted: Grand Promenade at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center
Why we love their looks: We were immediately drawn toward Sara & Suruzi’s styles when we spotted them at Concept Korea’s presentation and were pleasantly impressed to find out that they are designers themselves and were wearing clothes from their eponymous line, which debuted in 2009. Both graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with degrees in fashion design, and they decided to start their own contemporary line together right out of school.

Last year, we remember the streets of SoHo in NY completely jam-packed with stylish crowds for Fashion’s Night Out—and last night’s festivities lived up to the same hype. Celebrating FNO’s third year, it was a crazy, exciting and glamorous night out as we put our heels on and ventured out to store events on Fifth Avenue.

With the growing popularity of fashion design among Asian youth and the notable rise of Asian American designers (Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung, Phillip Lim, Richard Chai) in the fashion industry, it’s encouraging to hear about initiatives like Concept Korea, a program backed by the South Korean government to nurture their nation’s leading designers and promote them in the U.S. fashion industry.

Co-designed by Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein, the Timo Weiland spring 2011 presentation on Sunday titled “A Wharf on the Baltic” was a well-edited, contemporary collection for the young, polished consumer with distinct, bold style. Proving the duo as up-and-coming designers with tons of potential, the collection reflected a nautical spirit, inspired by the modern lifestyle of Scandanavia’s fjordlands and archipelagos. With bright bold colors and prints, color blocking, and playful twists, there was great detail and character embedded in each look.

While there is a plethora of talent showing at Lincoln Center’s premiere season, many designers opted to display their collections off-site in more intimate spaces. This season, Vietnamese-born Thuy Diep invited guests to the Audi Forum on Park Avenue for her show.
For spring/summer 2011, Thuy presented wearable separates in a warm color palette.
